Florida Summer Heat

Here in Florida, Summer is in full swing with temperatures averaging in the mid 90’s during the day. I don’t know how I used to endlessly run around in this kind of weather when I was a kid, but now a few hours in the heat is enough to knock me out for the rest of the day. Needless to say, my photo walks haven’t been as regular lately, but I have been trying to make it work. Going out early in the morning before the temp peaks or even experimenting with product style photography indoors has been a good way to still press the shutter button.

These first couple shots are from a market back in May at East End market. It was primarily an Asian food market so my wife wanted to check out some of her favorite vendors. While she browsed I went hunting for light and anything highlighted by it.

Another morning some time later, we made a short drive over to Park Ave in Winter Park for an early morning walk. This was the first place I went to back when I got my camera so I was interested to see what kind of shots I could get with some more experience in my bag.

Park Ave has some cool indoor/outdoor shopping areas that are great to duck into for a break from the sun. There was a particular staircase in one area that had a pocket of light we spent some time at. Had my wife pose with her Ryobi fan while crocheting of course.

If you’re a Florida native, you know that during Summer there is at least a 75% chance that it will thunderstorm later in the day. Between the brutal heat and potential for side-ways rain, I wanted a way to practice photography in my house. Thus the product photography experiment was born.

I had some soft box lights I got off Amazon a while back just sitting in my garage so they finally got some use. A friend of mine also got me a small photo backdrop kit that you can see above. I used that to practice taking photos of some random things in my room. Oh yeah, I bought an X100VI. I found one for MSRP at my local camera shop. Did I need a new camera? Nope. Was I ever going to see this camera in the wild again at retail price? Probably not. Anyway, here are some photos.

The photo walks might be a little less frequent during the Summer, but I’m going to keep working to make sure I press my shutter button regularly. Can’t always count on nice weather!
